Empowerment Through Service: How Short-term Mission Trips Impact Wayuu Communities and Churches in the US
This past summer, our short-term mission trips provided over 30 people the opportunity to experience Christian life outside the United States. Each team spent a week serving alongside Wayuu churches in La Guajira, Colombia, actively participating in spreading the Gospel. This experience allowed them to witness different cultural perspectives, engage in meaningful interactions with local communities, and gain a deeper understanding of our global mission as followers of Christ. Team members cultivated empathy, compassion, and a broader worldview, which enriched their spiritual growth and commitment to serving others.
Matt Smith, Student Pastor at First Baptist Alpharetta, said: “I’ve had the blessing of going all over the world on missions, but I’ve never experienced missions like I did this week… Doing ‘a day in the life,’ being in the village, not just visiting, but surrendering the entire day to be with people, it’s an experience I never had. Stepping into the life of someone that we are not just serving, but you’re being built up by, and that’s the heart of missions. So often, we feel like we have to show up with the answers, but more frequently than not, we show up, and we’re provided with answers; we’re the ones who learn, and we’re able to submit ourselves to the edification of saints which is a beautiful process that God works out as we grow on missions.”
Matt’s words echo several of our mission trip members’ experiences with Bread of Hope in Colombia. During their trip, they can serve and use the gifts God has given them to empower local native churches, connect with Indigenous believers, grow in community, and bring the love of Jesus to unreached Wayuu families.
